Chapter 12

Before the meeting tomorrow, Tracy spent the evening researching Dr. Mead and his specialty, neuroplasticity. From everything she could see Mead was an upstanding, well-respected neurologist and speaker on medical issues who was in demand. A devoted family man, Dr. Mead worked at a community hospital to be close to his family, who lived nearby. At first glance, there was no way he could be faulted for anything, or involved in these horrible murders. His entire life was devoted to healing.

When Tracy woke up early the next morning for the interview with Dr. Mead, it was pouring rain. She put on a charcoal wool dress and boots and pulled her hair back. Then she grabbed a comfortable raincoat before leaving to meet Dr. Mead at the Wharton Hotel downtown. To her surprise, her phone rang just as she was going to the door. Tracy hoped it wasn’t Mead calling to cancel or change the time of their appointment. There was a too much she had scheduled for the day.

Tracy picked up the phone quickly.

“Tracy, this is Wess,” a familiar voice sounded on the other end.

Tracy flinched. She hadn’t spoken to Wess in months now even though they’d been about to become engaged. Tracy felt cold from head to toe.

“Are you there? Did you hear me? I said this is Wess.” The voice grew gruffer.

“I heard you,” Tracy replied in a brittle tone.

“I know this has to be a surprise.” Wess’s voice softened. “I’m sorry I haven’t been in touch. I couldn’t.”

“This isn’t a good time to talk,” Tracy remarked.

“It’s never a good time for you, is it?” Wess responded, crestfallen. “But the case you’re on is all over the news and I’m worried.”

“This isn’t a good time,” Tracy repeated and hung up the phone. Then she pulled her coat tighter around her and went straight for the door. How dare Wess just call her out of the blue after so many months? It was her fault, too, for picking up. It was just the last thing she expected this morning. And the last thing she needed, as well.

Tracy took the elevator down, grabbed a cab, and headed straight for the Wharton Hotel. She could understand that Wess might be worried about her, but he wouldn’t have contacted her if he hadn’t broken up with his girlfriend, thought Tracy. She took a deep breath then, forcibly deciding to block him from her mind. The upcoming interview with Dr. Mead was too important to allow anything to rattle her. Still, in the back of her mind, Tracy couldn’t help but remember that there had been good times between her and Wess too, times of comfort and friendship. The relationship had unraveled out of the blue, and neither of them had really addressed it.
